Tsuruga Castle
Tsuruga Castle is recognized by local people as the symbol of Aizu-Wakamatsu City. The castle towers magnificently over the city. It is the only castle tower adorned with red roof tiles in Japan.
Butokuden
Butokuden, built in 1934, is a martial arts dojo located by the North Tower of Tsuruga Castle. Kendo is practiced by many sportsmen at this training hall.
Oyakuen Gardens
Oyakuen Gardens is a garden that was beloved by feudal lords, with a past deeply rooted in the history of Aizu. It includes a pond shaped in the Japanese character for the word ‘heart’. The pond, complete with picturesque fountain, reflects the beauty of each season’s changing colors.
Nisshinkan(samurai school)
Nisshinkan is a faithful reproduction of the Nisshinkan academic institution, used for educating the highest level of the Aizu Domain during the Edo period.
Mt. Iimori (Iimori-yama)
The burial place of a group of warriors known as the Byakkotai, who died during the Boshin War. The Byakkotai were influenced by the drastic change in the course of history that occurred during the last days of the Tokugawa shogunate.
Higashiyama Onsen
This onsen town is well known for the famous priest Gyoki having discovered the area’s hot springs about 1,300 years ago.
Ashinomaki Onsen
Ashinomaki Onsen is known for its beautiful landscapes and abundant hot spring supply. Enjoy the natural beauty and vivid colors of the four seasons from the comfort of a hot spring at Ashinomaki Onsen.
Ouchi-juku
More than 30 thatched-rooved houses line the streets of Ouchi-juku, giving visitors the impression of having traveled back to the Edo Period. Ouchi-juku used to be used as a post station – an area where travelers could rest for the night – during the Edo Period. Strikingly beautiful in every season.
No.1 Tadami River Bridge Viewpoint
The Tadami Line railway bridge against a backdrop of the Tadami River makes for stunning scenery during each of the four seasons.Reach the viewpoint by bus to take your own photos. The bus leaves outside Aizu-Miyashita Station on the Tadami Line.
Kasumiga Castle Park
Kasumiga Castle Park, located in the castle town of Nihonmatsu City, is surrounded by the Adatara mountains. The ruins of Kasumiga Castle – selected as one of Japan’s 100 best castles, are preserved in the park, and become adorned with cherry blossoms in the spring. When fall comes, visitors can view a fantastic display of chrysanthemum flowers shaped into dolls.
Renge Temple (Weeping Cherry Tree)
Renge Temple is located about 15 minutes on foot from Nihonmatsu Station. This weeping cherry tree, which blooms beautifully in the spring, is estimated to be 350 years old.
Nihonmatsu City History Museum
A facility with the characteristics of both an art gallery and a museum. It exhibits the works of artists who have a relationship with the town, as well as historic materials dating from the Medieval Ages to the modern times, which are related to the castle lords of Nihonmatsu Castle, the Hatakeyama Clan, and the Niwa Clan.
Komine Castle
Komine Castle stands proudly in Shirakawa City, which is considered one of the three greatest major castle towns in Fukushima Prefecture. The castle surrendered in the Battle of Shirakawaguchi, during the Boshin War. In the spring, light pink ‘otome cherry blossoms’ bloom beautifully near the ‘honmaru’ (the main building of the castle).
Sagawa Daruma Shop
Daruma are considered to bring good fortune. At Sagawa Daruma, you can view a selection of daruma, and even experience painting your own.
Suirakuen
A circuit-style garden located on the north side of Nanko Park in Shirakawa City. Enjoy a matcha tea as you gaze out upon seasonal flowers or autumn leaves from the Shōrakutei Tea House.
Nanko Park
The park was constructed in 1801 and is considered to be the oldest park in Japan.
